Episode 1 - The iPhone and Gutenberg

Well the iPhone came out on June 29, 2007 so what better tech story to start with? It turns out that the iPhone reminded the two of us of some other tech innovations, such as the printing press, the telegraph, the telephone, TV etc. Now we are not comparing the iPhone itself to these much more important innovations, but well Steve Jobs, Steve Gutenberg... OK, we meant the printing press guy, not the actor.

When you think about it, the iPhone, and other multimedia devices like it, are not unlike the tricorder. That must have been one hell of a wi fi connection that Spock had.

Thanks to Isabelle for the music.

Well, that was fun! So, some random thoughts...

(Oh, I'm blushing... *bats her eyes*)

The telegraph had a worse problem as a medium than just being expensive (and part of the cause for the expense, too, probably)--it was s-l-o-o-o-o-w, you were getting the information not even one letter at a time, but a part of a letter at at time. I would think that would be an excrutiating way to communicate. Once it was translated into print, it was okay, even if, ahem, telegraphic, but to receive and translate oneself...

Hey, not everyone in the ST-TNG universe was happy with the transporter. Dr. Pulaski wouldn't use it, and Barclay had something like "transporter psychosis"--if there's a name for it, presumably there's a substantial number of people who have it?

I have no use for a $600 + service phone. I don't. I have to keep repeating that, because I really want one. I can't afford it, and I don't need it, but...it's so gorgeous. It's from Apple. It eliminates the need to carry around all sorts of devices, which would eliminate the problem of juggling from one to the next. According to the reviews I've read/listened to, it works beautifully and pretty much seamlessly. It's not perfect, but of course later iterations will be better (I'm not a version 1.0-type anyway). But, it's gorgeous, and inspires serious techno-lust...

I try to forget about Dr. Pulaski..

I thought about Barclay when we were talking about the transporter, but it seemed to me that his behaviour was abnormal.

I would love one, but I cannot afford an iPhone, and well, they are not available in Canada yet anyway. I know what you mean though, I carry an iPod, a Palm, an LG Chocolate phone and a laptop with me most everywhere. It would be nice to have a little something that did most of the stuff.

Actually, I preferred Pulaski to Crusher. (*ducks*) Also, I remembered her (the actress, not the character, of course) from TOS, which was an automatic plus...

I'm hoping for a sort of nano version of the iPhone in a few years, so that I can afford to ditch some of the gizmos I tote around.

By the way, great music!
